BEAUTIFUL ALMÁCHAR

ALMÁCHAR is a quintessential Spanish village with picturesque white painted houses climbing up the sun-drenched mountainside. With the spectacular mountain formations embracing the village, the view from the terrace of the hotel is undoubtedly one of the most scenic in the entire Axarquia area.

A silent, late afternoon, somewhere in the distance, a dog on guard is barking. The sky is ever blue, as always. A slow growing clutter from footwear, the silence is broken by a lone hiker with plenty of time and no stress, walking by on the warm, cobblestone streets.

Almáchar is situated between two rivers, located in a green and fruitful farmland with vineyards and plantations. “Tranquilo” (calm), is the most common description of this authentic Andalusian village. Approximately 2000 people call Almáchar home. Almost no tourists come here. The fact that most streets are too narrow for cars makes the village even more peaceful.

Many farmers use donkeys for transportation in the village. An unashamedly sunburnt man walks through the village, with each hand leading a donkey, carrying fresh mangos to the local grocery. In Almáchar, a wandering tourist can truly meet the authentic, unglamorous Andalusian village.

From a vantage point just outside the seemingly oversized police station (this is a regional station for large parts of the entire Axarqía area), houses down below look almost as if they were dropped from the sky. However, entering the village the genius of Moorish city planning becomes clear. Streets, alleyways, and squares neatly braid together in a labyrinthine pattern. In the center stands a church, a town hall, and a library.

One of the oldest and unmistakably most beautiful buildings of Almáchar is the 17th century San Mateo, breathing gothic renaissance style. The old church right next to the hotel is well worth a visit.

Take a stroll through the village at nighttime and the alleys are lit by yellow light glowing from antique black metal lamps. The winding streets, illuminated by the yellow glow of antique black metal lamps, invite to explore Almáchar by the evening light.

The village has everything you need: two butchers, two bakeries, several grocery stores, two seafood stores, a market square where farmers sell vegetables and fruit, and several general stores selling everything ranging between washing machines and candy. Local winemakers have numerus resellers in Almáchar.

Ten restaurants and café’s serve meat, fish and vegetarian food with low prices. 12 Euro for one main course and a glass of wine is standard. Gazpacho, the cold tomato soup made of garlic, breadcrumbs, olive oil, water, vinegar, tomatoes, salt, peppers, and cucumber are perfect on a hot summer day.

On Fridays, the local flamenco club at the big square serves tapas, beer and wine at shamelessly low prices. This big square has a central role in the village. Sit down on a bench to look at interesting people passing by.

Even during the winter street life is lively at the square. Five gentlemen with canes kill time together. A tractor carrying livestock arrives. A cargo truck carrying melons stops. The farmer exits, drinks a glass of Anise Liqueur at bar Lopez, and then enters his truck again and drives away. There are no high-rise buildings or tourists here, nor tourist shops. Yet you feel very welcome. As a visitor, you certainly stand out, and the reward for that is some extra attention and service.

If you wish to take a bus to the coast, buses depart from and return to the village three times daily. However, biking to the coast is faster—exactly 40 minutes from the hotel to Torre del Mar, on a heavy steel bike, with a leisurely pace. My top speed on a bike is 84km/h in the longest downhill (the brave guy can probably even reach over 100km/h before it turns, if the brakes works well).

The bus to Torre del Mar takes 45 minutes, and the car around 20-25 minutes. Torre del Mar has the best beach in the area; airy, calm, and soft sand. The shortest way to the beach at Rincon de la Victoria is the steep, winding and breathtaking mountain road through the village of Moclinejo.

Don’t rush here, enjoy the amazing views and look forward to the cooling swim in the glittering Mediterranean.

The 16 km downhill bike ride takes 15 minutes and is a well-deserved reward after the first half 5 km steadily uphill from Almáchar, where you mainly climb in an avenue with sun protecting trees on the ridge. In August with 32 degrees, it offers some relief.

The beach in Victoria de la Rincón is also nice, but slightly more populated if you do not choose the far flank closest to Malaga.

As the largest village in the region, Almáchar is the cultural Mecca of the Axargía region.

On the first weekend in May and the end of July, festivals are held in memory of the patron saint of the village. Music, dance, fireworks, and sporting events are held around the main square with the big permanent stage.

In mid-May, another major folk festival is held in the village, a pilgrimage to San Isidro.

The first Saturday in September is the Ajoblanco celebration, when all visitors are treated to the white cold soup, among other things.

The Cultural Week in June and the Carnival in December are other highlights of this cultural village.

Semana Santa (Easter), is a gigantic performance in Almáchar. Jesus’ walk to Calvary is one of the most spectacular features, staged by the villagers themselves. The dramatic music and acting continue during the night and incorporate all generations. The streets are covered with people who have come in their finest clothing, partly to proclaim their dedication to Christ, but most of all celebrate when Easter day arrives. Many suggest that all of this is just an excuse to eat, drink, and socialize. But a little celebration isn’t a bad thing either.
